ReRooted - A Research Backed Paradigm for Change - Part 2
As a health coach and a life coach, I spend a lot of time working with my clients on new habits.
Over time, I’ve come to adopt my own paradigm for change to support them because let’s be real - this world wasn’t built to support us. So why are we trying to fit into it?
This is part two: Reset.
(Psst: make sure you’ve read Part One: Rest here before diving into Reset).
The reset phase is the energy of a runner putting their feet in the starting block, hands on the ground and their face looking up at the track in determination, ready to go.
Reset is spring time. The sun is starting to spend more time in our days and flowers are starting to bloom.
This phase is the energy of the morning, when you still have hope for the day ahead before your kids start yelling at you or a coworker is rude to you, again.
The reset phase is when you get to take the power of rest and reflection from phase one and start declaring to the world what’s next for you.
Reclaim your goals and how you’re going to make this next action for yourself.
Refine the reasons you’re taking action for yourself.
Use this fresh energy and momentum you’re building in reset. Here are some steps to do just that:
Surround yourself in support of this change. Post your goal on sticky notes and put them up around your house, car, office, etc, create a vision board, set a timer on your phone with reminders or change the background of your phone.
These are a few ideas to get you started. The point is, you’re going for this thing so surround yourself with reasons and reminders of what this change is going to bring you in your life, how it’s going to change your way of being.Tell as many people as possible what you’re gearing up for and ask for their support. Now I’m not saying that Snobby Susan in the cubicle over needs to hear this but in your trusted circle, let them know you’re excited for what’s coming AND - this is very important - how they can support you in that change.
It might look something like, “Hey Friend. I’ve decided I’m going to start working out three days a week. I’m excited but nervous if I’m being honest, and would love your support. Do you want to join me for a class or can I text you after so I can celebrate that I did it?”
A research study from the American Study of Training & Development (ASTD) found that a person’s success rate jumps 30%, from 65% to 95%, when they have a regular check in with an accountability partner.Review your goal and reflections from Phase One to make sure you have what you need to be successful. If you want to start working out, for example, do you have appropriate clothes or shoes? Do you need a membership somewhere maybe?
Make sure you can answer the following questions:
What change am I working on in this phase?
Is this change pushing me outside of my comfort zone but still feels doable?
What other tools or resources do I need that I don’t have to support me or am I ready to go?
How often will I take action on this change and when will I do it?
Believe in yourself, Love. You’ve got this. Know that whatever the coming weeks have in store for you, you will be different on the other side.
